Recommended Resources
Overall Course
1. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology International Student Version (Gerard J. Tortora)
a. This will be your main textbook for this year, as the teaching provided in LSRC and during plenaries follows this book very comprehensively. You could almost think of this book as your unofficial curriculum for first year. It’s a fantastic book to learn the basics of anatomy and physiology with as the book portrays the appropriate depth that you need to delve into for first year. Tortora will be useful throughout the whole year and is helpful leading up to the End of Year One Examination.
2. Gray's Anatomy for Students
a. If you’re looking for colourful, simplified pictures to help you remember your anatomy then this is a very helpful book. The diagrams in this book are great, as they allow you to compare anatomical structures from many different anatomical planes/angles. This will be beneficial in enabling you learn the human body in a simple, easy to understand way.
3. Moore Clinically Orientated Anatomy (Moore and Daley)
a. Once again this book is like Grey’s in the way that the pictures will really help you get to grips with anatomy. This book is also great at teaching basics of physiology too, as it includes some information about certain diseases that may helpful to know from first year.
4. Kumar and Clark’s Clinical Medicine
a. This book is used by many first years, mainly due to its overview of anatomy and physiology. The key focus in this book is to apply clinical relevance to the anatomy you will learn, so that you can understand how everything links together causing certain illnesses and diseases.
AMK Revision
5. Look out for smaller editions, like Essentials of Kumar and Clark’s Clinical Medicine, and Kumar and Clark’s Medical Management and Therapeutics. These are concise guides which only tell you the relevant information about diseases, investigation, diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, may be helpful to use as
AMK prep.
6. Every medical student must have Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine. Although in my opinion it may be too complex to understand as a first year, it’s a great revision tool for the AMK if you can get your head round all the abbreviations!
